Newcastle United will face Manchester City in the fourth round of the League Cup after a 3-2 extra-time win at Selhurst Park eased some of the pressure on Alan Pardew.
A brace Emmanuel Riviere looked to have sent the Magpies through in normal time, but a last gasp equaliser from Palace youngster Sullay Kaikai forced extra-time, where Paul Dummett clinched the winner for the ten men in the 112th minute.
Wilfried Zaha, Kevin Doyle and Zeki Fryers were among 11 changes to the side which claimed all three points at Goodison Park at the weekend and there was a place on the bench for the returning fans favourite Andy Johnson.
The Magpies made half a dozen changes to their team which fought back from two goals down to rescue a point at home to Hull City on Saturday with Rob Elliot and Sammy Ameobi among those drafted in.
Dwight Gayle went close to breaking the deadlock for the home side after just two minutes when he drilled a shot just wide after latching on to a Doyle knock-down.
But it took until midway through the first half for the tie to really get going when Daryl Janmaat conceded a penalty after he was adjudged to have brought down Zaha who tricked his way into the area, Gayle took responsibility and fired low into the bottom corner for his fifth in all competitions this season.
United looked for an immediate response and Jack Colback was denied by a last ditch challenge by Brede Hangeland, before Riviere equalised 10 minutes before the break with a confidence boosting first goal for the Toon as he cooly placed his left-footed effort into the bottom corner leaving Wayne Hennessy stranded.
Two minutes into the second half, the visitors were awarded a penalty of their own when Eagles captain Paddy McCarthy brought down Ameobi giving Riviere the opportunity to double his tally and he duly smashed the spot kick into the roof of the net to complete the turnaround.
The introduction of Andy Johnson with 20 minutes to go certainly lifted the home fans and players alike, Gayle went close to his second of the night but his header from a Barry Bannan free-kick hit the base of the post.
At the other end Hennessey had to be a full stretch to deny a swirling Adam Armstrong strike from finding the top corner but in injury time Kaikai equalised on his Eagles debut at the second attempt to send the tie into extra-time.
Mehdi Abeid was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 100th minute but the 10 men went ahead in the second half of extra-time as Dummett stooped to head home his first of the season to set up a meeting with the holders.
