Radical preacher Anjem Choudary among those arrested on terrorism charges

POLICE in London arrested nine men yesterday as part of an investigation into Islamic terrorism.

The men, who were all seized in London, were arrested on suspicion of being members of — or supporting — the banned organisation  al-Muhajiroun, the Metropolitan Police said.

The nine, aged between 22 and 51, were arrested as “part of an ongoing investigation into Islamist-related terrorism and are not in response to any immediate public safety risk,” Scotland Yard said.

Among those arrested is believed to have been radical preacher Anjem Choudary.

Counter-terrorism police were yesterday searching 18 addresses across London and one in Stoke-on-Trent.

Al-Muhajiroun, which was co-founded by Mr Choudary, was banned in Britain in 2010. A study suggested that in the preceding 12 years 18 per cent of Islamic extremists convicted of terror offences in this country had current or former links with it.
