Isis executes female rights activist in Mosul

UN officials in Iraq revealed yesterday that human rights lawyer Samira Salih al-Nuaimi has been publicly killed in Mosul after an Islamic State (Isis) court found her guilty of apostasy.

She was seized from her home on September 17 after allegedly posting messages on Facebook that were critical of Isis forces’ destruction of religious sites in Mosul.

The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq said that Ms Nuaimi had been tried in a so-called “Sharia court,” after which she was tortured for five days before being sentenced to public execution.

She was killed on Monday, the UN mission said.

“By torturing and executing a female human rights lawyer and activist — defending in particular the civil and human rights of her fellow citizens in Mosul — Isil (Isis) continues to attest to its infamous nature, combining hatred, nihilism and savagery, as well as its total disregard of human decency,” said UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov.
