THE occupation of a formerly empty block of flats on the Carpenters Estate in Newham, east London, has brought the community closer, activists said yesterday.
Focus E15 mothers have thanked people for their support as they marked the first week of the occupation of 40 Doran Walk.
Under a picture posted on Facebook of the site with children drawing and people playing music, they wrote: “Community in Unity.”
The occupation has continuously held family events and been flooded with small acts of kindness.
Last Friday’s barbecue survived on donations of charcoal from neighbours.
“Come for some food later,” said one of the activists managing the grill.
That evening’s open mic included the participation of youngsters from around the estate rapping, beat boxing and telling some jokes.
But the programme’s highlight was a little girl taking to the stage to perform Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with the entire audience singing along with the second chorus.
