Typhoon looms over Japanese Grand Prix

Forecasters warn it'll be rainy, but race should be fine to go ahead

SUNDAY’S Japanese Grand Prix may be affected by Typhoon Phanfone but weather forecasters said yesterday it would be unlikely to scupper the race.

MeteoGroup’s Alexi Venerus said that, in its current state, Phanfone may not even hit Japanese land and would allow for a clean fight for the race win and title supremacy.

“The weather itself for the actual area won’t be particularly very nice but in terms of the high-strength winds, they look like — at this moment in time — they should still be well offshore or further south anyway,” she said.

Tomorrow’s practice sessions and Saturday’s qualifying are expected to take place before any serious change in the weather.
