A NEW English A-Level curriculum will include works by comedian Russell Brand and interviews with rap star Dizzee Rascal, the exams watchdog announced yesterday.
Ofqual has given the new materials the thumbs-up and sixth-formers can expect to be learning of Mr Brand’s drugs policy as early as September next year.
But the government was none too happy, with a Department for Education source confiding: “Schools should be aware that if they offer this rubbish in place of a proper A-level, then pupils may not get into good universities.”
The comments came despite the fact that exam board OCR also included in the new curriculum more classical works by George Orwell and Charlotte Bronte and the poems of Emily Dickinson and William Blake.
“Our aim in creating the specification was to produce a course with a rich, diverse mix of content — including highly regarded contemporary texts as well as long-established works — that will inspire and engage a new generation of students,” said OCR director Paul Dodd.
