Saturday’s big betting race is the Challenge Cup Heritage Handicap at Ascot (3.50) and I fancy a huge run from the top weight Chil The Kite.
This classy sort likes it around here and was far from disgraced in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood last time out.
This is more his cup of tea and his finishing speed can take out the likes of probable favourite Prince’s Trust and Highland Acclaim.
The latter looks a huge danger following his running on effort in the Ayr Gold Cup and this step back up to seven furlongs should benefit him immensely.
The added plus is that we know he acts well at Ascot and his fifth behind Safety Check in a very similar race to this over course and distance last month makes him a leading player here.
Earlier on, the Listed Rous Stakes at 2.05 has Muthmir written all over it following his success in the Portland Handicap, but from a value point of view and with some rain in the air I am going to stick with last year’s winner Steps.
Later on the card, Taajub can finally land a nice prize this season in the finale at 5.00. This evergreen sprinter lost all chance at the start at Leicester last time out when slowly away and badly hampered.
He finished with a real spring in his step that day and as long as the ground remains on the fast side, the seven-year-old can see off Major Crispies and Foxy Forever. The latter saw too much daylight last time out and remains with potential.
At Newmarket, Kiyoshi can take the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes ahead of Integral at 3.30, while the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy at 3.05 has Limato written all over it.
Sunday sees the big meeting at Longchamp and the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at 3.30.
A lot will depend on the draw, but I think we will see a huge run from the beaten French Derby favourite Prince Gibraltar and I will be having a saver on him at a big price behind the Japanese horse Just A Way.
The latter is arguably the best horse in the race courtesy of his success in Dubai earlier in the year and the only question mark surrounds his ability to see out the extra quarter mile.
However, they don’t usually go an out and out gallop anymore in the Arc so as long as his Japanese jockey doesn’t mess things up I suspect his turn of foot could prove crucial at the business end.
Of the fillies I think Tapestry should not be ruled out and she may confirm form with Taghrooda, while Ectot and Flintshire can also make their presence felt.
Earlier on, Sole Power can grab another group one by landing the L’Abbaye at 1.00.
