Cuba sends more health workers

Health: Cuba is sending more than 160 health workers to British facilities in Africa to help in the battle against Ebola.

World Health Organization chief Dr Margaret Chan said the agency was extremely grateful for the help which is due to arrive in Sierra Leone.

Cuba Solidarity Campaign said the idea of Cuban medics using British facilities to provide first-class treatment for sufferers is a real sign of progress in delivering emergency treatments, with the experience of the former collaborating with the financial resources of the latter.

 

Fabian Society warns of threat from Ukip

Threat: Labour scholars urged the party not to underestimate Ukip yesterday after losing yet another council seat to the Eurosceptics.

The latest by-elections saw Ukip’s Norman Dennis take Westoe, South Tyneside, from Labour’s Katharine Maxwell by a margin of 51 votes.

Shortly after South Tyneside’s results were announced, the Fabian Society published a report on Ukip’s threat to Labour scolding Labour complacency.

 

Extinction threat to elephants

Wildlife: Elephants and rhinos could be extinct within two decades, campaigners warned yesterday ahead of marches across the world to call for greater protection for the two species.

Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets in Europe, the US, South America, Africa and Asia for the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos today, with events in London, Bristol, Birmingham and Edinburgh in Britain.

 

Care UK workers plan new strike

Care: Care UK strikers are to stage an overnight “picket camp” outside the offices of the healthcare privateer in Doncaster next week.

Care UK slashed wages and attacked conditions and the staff have been staging periods of strike action for nine months. They are currently staging a three-week strike and will held an overnight picket on Thursday.
