Rail ‘day of action’ launched

Rail workers and supporters in northern England yesterday launched the next stage of their campaign against savage cuts on two key networks — a week of action at railway stations across the north.

Both Northern Rail and Trans-Pennine Express franchises are up for grabs.

The Northern Rail franchise demands that bidders include proposals for driver-only trains, meaning the sacking of conductors and guards, and Trans-Pennine bidders are given the option of driver-only trains.

RMT union is campaigning against the cuts, which include reduced ticket office services.
