STUC general secretary Grahame Smith warned yesterday that failure to engage the Scottish people on devolution powers could result in a “shabby compromise.”
He told delegates at the STUC Black Workers conference that a “cobbled together deal” which focused only on the proposals of the three main Westminster parties could fall apart even before the general election in May.
Mr Smith said: “The Scottish public are impatient for change and a prolonged process is in no-one’s interest.
“However, without the time for proper community engagement the danger is that the outcome will be a shabby political compromise that fails to satisfy.”
Gozie Joe Adigwe, who chaired the Black Workers conference, told the Morning Star: “The discussion on further devolution should be a citizen-led process building on the high level of political engagement that currently exists in Scotland.”
She said the conference had focused on “organising more black workers better” by supporting more representatives in union structures and recruiting more black workers into unions.
“We want to use the referendum campaign engagement as a kick start for trade union activity for black workers,” she said.
