Koreas exchange warning shots in disputed waters

The rival Koreas exchanged warning shots at sea yesterday.

A Seoul official claimed that a North Korean warship had briefly entered disputed territory controlled by the South.

During the ship’s 10-minute stay, the South first broadcast a warning before letting off warning shots and the North returned fire, with the South then firing again — although both sides just hit water and there were no injuries reported.

Pyongyang rejects the maritime line drawn by the United States and UN after the Korean War reached stalemate in the 1950s.

The fracas came as both sides have been making moves towards restarting high-level talks.

A delegation of senior Pyongyang officials attended the closing ceremony of the Asian Games in Incheon on Sunday.

And on Monday, South Korean President Park Geun Hye stressed the need to hold regular high-level talks.
