FIVE thousand postcards are to be delivered to the Department for Transport from angry rail passengers protesting against plans for rip-off franchises in northern England.
Two key northern rail networks currently operated by Northern Rail and Trans-Pennine Express are up for grabs.
New franchisees will be able to raise fares, ditch jobs, shut or reduce ticket office services and introduce driver-only trains.
Rail union RMT is stopping tens of thousands of northern rail users at dozens of stations to warning them of what is happening.
Thousands have responded by signing postcards protesting to the Department for Transport, which is carrying out a low-profile public consultation.
“The attack on the fare-paying public has already begun and the delivery of nearly five thousand cards protesting against the plans on Monday is only the start of the RMT-organised fight-back,” said RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash.
