Rabbi offends with Israel comments

COMMONWEALTH Orthodox chief rabbi Ephraim Mirvis risked outrage among Jews and non-Jews alike yesterday when he claimed the Israeli government had acted “understandably and justifiably” during its assault on Palestine.

“During this war it has been a truism that if Hamas would lay down its weapons, there would be peace,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today.

“If Israel would lay down its weapons, there would be no Israel.

“Israel has faced a direct, unmasked attempt to destroy Israeli life with some three-and-a-half thousand missiles being fired purposefully at population centres.

“The Israeli government has understandably and justifiably defended her citizens.”

Nearly 2,000 Palestinians have died during the ongoing conflict, exceeding the appalling death toll from 2008’s Operation Cast Lead, which saw 1,400 Palestinians killed and led to war crimes allegations against Israel.

Hundreds of thousands have taken to the streets of the world’s cities in protest against the ongoing bloodshed.
