Wood aim to end seven year winless run v Swans

A look ahead to a mouth-watering fixture between Boreham Wood and Staines, with Ravit Anand

In the space of seven days, the non-league football season will already be three games old.

After two match-days no fewer than eleven teams have 100 per cent records across all three Football Conference divisions.

Boreham Wood are one of just two teams so far who have won both of their opening games and lead the pack with eight goals scored with no replies.

An opening day 2-0 win at home to Farnborough gave them a perfect start and that was followed by a thumping Hertfordshire rivals Hemel Hempstead Town 6-0 in front of their own fans.

Up next for Ian Allinson’s men is a tricky trip to Wheatsheaf Park to face Marcus Gayle’s Staines Town.

Tricky simply because the Wood have a torrid record against the Swans. If ever a side had a bogey team, for Boreham Wood it is definitely Staines.

The Surrey outfit are unbeaten against Boreham Wood in 13 meetings, spanning across seven years and in two divisions.

The last time Boreham Wood registered a win was back in December 2006, when a 2-1 win at Meadow Park in the Isthmian Premier League earned three points.

But since then, Staines have come out on top on nine occasions, including both fixtures last season.

Two own goals from Wood keeper James Russell in the opening half set Staines on their way to a 3-1 win at Wheatsheaf Park, with the double being completed in April with a 2-0 victory at Meadow Park.

Goals are guaranteed when these two have met in recent years.

Of those previous 13 meetings, only one match has ended in a goalless draw, with the other dozen seeing a minimum of two goals scored.

The Swans though will be a wounded animal after their 3-2 defeat to St Albans City in midweek at home.

An opening day 2-1 win at Whitehawk, plus a 2-0 lead against St Albans looked to be putting Staines level on points with Boreham Wood on six points but three goals conceded in 10 minutes turned the game on its head.

For Boreham Wood, the season couldn’t have got off to a better start. Eight goals scored by four different players and two clean sheets.

As for Staines, one positive is that star striker Louie Theophanous is continuing where he left off last season where he scored 21 league goals, bagging three goals in the first two games.

The former AFC Wimbledon youngster has ambitious targets this season: to score 25 league goals, help Staines reach a play-off spot and earn himself a move into the Football League next season.

So far, so good for the 22-year-old on the goals front but he’ll need his teammates to step up if they’re to build on their eighth-place finish last season.

Two seasons ago Boreham Wood spent the majority of the season in the play-off places, and even mounted a serious title challenge, but one win in their last eight saw them drift away and slip out of contention.

Both sides enjoyed FA Cup runs last season, making it to the FA Cup First Round against Football League sides.

Staines went down 5-0 at Brentford, whils Carlisle needed a replay and a stoppage time winner to see of Boreham Wood 2-1.

But it’s the bread and butter of the Conference South that both sets of managers and players will want success this season.

Nothing’s won after three games in the season, but no side wants to be playing catch-up either.
