SCOTTISH LABOUR leader Richard Leonard has backed proposals from union leaders to ensure that postal staff are protected and mail continues to be delivered during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Last week, the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) put forward comprehensive proposals highlighting a lack of personal protective wear and reduction in staff numbers.
Representatives also called for Royal Mail to prioritise personal mail deliveries, medical supplies and essential mail.
Yesterday Mr Leonard branded Royal Mail “irresponsible” for failing to address health and safety issues. After receiving a letter outlining the proposals, Mr Leonard threw his weight behind the proposals, urging Royal Mail to work with the CWU to improve the situation.
Mr Leonard said: “These proposals would ensure a postal service adapted to the emergency situation in which we are all living and on which so many communities and isolated households depend.
“I am urging Royal Mail to work with the workforce to provide the service we all need.”
