PAKISTANI opposition politician Imran Khan said today that he had suspended talks with the government after it appointed a new police chief in the capital Islamabad
Thousands of Khan supporters were besieging parliament for a second day to press Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign over alleged election fraud.
Officials held “initial” talks with the opposition groups yesterday morning.
Cabinet Minister Ahsan Iqbal said the two sides were trying to find a “win-win solution” after Pakistan’s powerful army chief General Rasheel Sharif told Mr Sharif’s government to negotiate with the protesters.
Twin protests by supporters of Mr Khan and cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri have virtually shut down the capital Islamabad.
The protesters had entered the “Red Zone” housing government buildings and diplomatic posts, surrounding the parliament building.
But Prime Minister Sharif was back in parliament yesterday, where MPs adopted a resolution rejecting “unconstitutional demands” and vowing to “uphold the supremacy of the constitution.”
