Ukip Glasgow rally plan slammed

A LEADING anti-fascist campaigner in Scotland yesterday slammed Ukip plans for a rally in Glasgow on the Saturday before the independence referendum.

Rab O’Donnell, secretary of Hope not Hate Scotland, said the Ukip rally was “a cynical attempt to capitalise on their EU result in Glasgow where they got over a thousand people to vote for them.”

He told the Morning Star: “This will undoubtedly appeal to far right and fascist organisations such as the BNP, Britannica and Britain First — which has previously offered to provide security for Nigel Farage.

“They are looking for a party to get behind and Ukip fits that bill for them.”

Ukip plan to hold its “pro-union” rally in Glasgow on Saturday, September 12 — the day before an Orange Order British Together parade is scheduled to take place in Edinburgh.

Ukip’s Scottish party chairman Arthur Thackery said the venue for the Glasgow rally would not be announced until the last minute “for security purposes — given the history.”

Mr O’Donnell said Hope not Hate and other groups would look at a counter protest.

“We need to get the real facts out about Ukip so people can find out what they really stand for.”
