Falcao to complete Van Gaal’s United galaticos

Striker set to be the seventh arrival at the club

It was a deadline day to remember for Manchester United fans as the club were set to announce the signings of Radamel Falcao and Daley Blind.

As the Morning Star went to press, neither deals had been confirmed by the club but it is thought that they would be completed by time the transfer window closed at 11pm yesterday.

Blind joins for £13.8 million from Ajax and was a key member of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands side which reached the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup.

But the arrival of the Colombian was the biggest news in a day where the club were thought to be uninvolved in the transfer market.

A year-long deal was agreed between Monaco and United in the early hours of yesterday morning and Van Gaal wasted no time in completing it, with neighbours Manchester City said to be in the running for the striker.

Arsenal were offered the striker but baulked at the transfer fee and his wage demands, thought to be in the region of £350,000 a week.

Real Madrid were thought to have a deal wrapped up for the 27-year-old on Saturday but that fell through, instead opting to bring in United striker Javier Hernandez on a season-long loan with an option to buy the Mexican at the end of the term.

Falcao will join United for an initial fee of £6m but can make the deal permanent for around £45m next season.

The striker had a small medical in France before flying in a private jet to United’s training ground to complete the rest of the move.

Falcao’s agent Jorge Mendes claimed “It is a permanent deal but due to the fair play rules the first year must be a loan.” But that was yet to be confirmed by time the Star went to press yesterday evening.

Falcao would be the seventh signing to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, with the total outlay said to be over £150m.

It has been a record summer for the club, who have also splashed out £59.7m for Angel di Maria, £27m for Luke Shaw, £15m for Marcos Rojo, £28m for Ander Herrera as well as £13.85m for Blind.

United are still waiting for Rojo’s visa to come through but that will not affect the Argentina defender’s transfer as the international transfer certificate has been received, confirming his move from Sporting Lisbon.
