Abbott signs uranium deal with India’s Modi

Australian PM reiterates refusal to deal with Russia

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott told parliament that he will today sign a uranium export deal with India, having banned exports of the nuclear fuel to Russia until further notice.

He plans to sign a nuclear co-operation agreement with newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a three-day visit to Mumbai and New Delhi that starts today.

The conservative PM declared an official end to the uranium trade with Russia in response to a call from the Greens for uranium to be included in trade sanctions over Russia’s role in Ukraine.

“Australia has no intention of selling uranium to a country which is so obviously in breach of international law as Russia currently is,” he declared.

It will have no practical effect, since only a single shipment was made in 2012, five years after an initial bilateral trade agreement, and for commercial reasons there have been no further shipments.
