Shipyard workers to vote on action over dismal pay offer

GMB confirms staff could walk out

WORKERS at Cammell Laird shipyard on Merseyside voted for industrial action over pay yesterday.

The 560 members of general union GMB will launch an overtime ban and work to rule on Thursday next week, September 11.

If the company does not open “meaningful” talks, the workers will strike for 24 hours on Monday September 22.

Cammell Laird’s Birkenhead yard specialises in refitting military ships, commercial ship repairs, conversions and shipbuilding.

One big project in the yard is a refit of the Navy’s Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Fort Victoria, due for delivery in December.

The company also does work for the offshore wind industry and the civil nuclear sector.

GMB regional officer Albie McGuigan said: “For the last few months GMB has been trying to improve pay and some additional terms and conditions for our members at Cammell Laird shipyard.

“All attempts have failed and the company’s offer is far short of our aspirations.”
