SALFORD EXHIBITION
The State of Us
The Lowry
January 9-February 23
From the grotesque to the wonderful, in this free exhibition digital artists examine how the body and self are transformed, manipulated, reinvented and reshaped to create a new “self” and reshape our human connection, for better or worse.
The exhibition explores how through time, natural evolution has shaped the world we live and as a consequence the intervention of the human species is overriding natural laws of selection.
Now that the balance has tipped towards engineered evolution by a single species, it raises questions about how technology’s intervention is surpassing the rate of nature and rewriting the laws of evolution.
BIRMINGHAM/TOURING THEATRE
Pride and Prejudice (sort of)
The Rep
October 12

Adapted by Isobal McArthur from Jane Austen’s novel, this production has an all-female cast to tell the classic romantic story — with added karaoke.
Men, money and microphones will be fought over in this loving and irreverent version of Pride and Prejudice, which sees a cast of servants taking on multiple roles to tell the story.
It is, says McArthur, “a show simply for anyone who enjoys a great night out full of colour, music and laughter.
“I’d encourage anybody put off by the associated stuffiness or frilly corsetry of the Austen legacy to give this a go – and I’d tell those who love Austen not to worry because we do, too. This is a deeply affectionate re-telling of her brilliant, enduring story.”
Well worth catching.
EDINBURGH MUSIC
Carrying Stream Festival
Various venues
October 8-10

This year Edinburgh Folk Club’s annual Carrying Stream Festival celebrates the life and work of Hamish Henderson, who died in 2002.
Poet, songwriter, communist, intellectual and soldier, Henderson (pictured) was a catalyst for the folk revival in Scotland and to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth there’s a tremendous line-up of talent performing over three days, including the great songwriter Rab Noakes, popular four-piece folk group Malinky, the Sangstream Choir, Findlay Napier, Beth Malcolm and Lewis McLaughlin.
Also included in an excellent programme are talks and songwriting workshops.
LIVERPOOL THEATRE
The Everyman Rock ‘n’ Roll panto: Sleeping Beauty
Everyman
November 23- January 18
Going back to what seems like forever, the Everyman’s annual festive rock’n’roll panto is one of the highlights of the Liverpool theatre season.
This year promises the same and going on the publicity blurb, it looks irresistible: “It’s shocking! It’s rocking! It’s incredibly cool!/For this baby shower bring a cagoule!/Slip on your spandex, shake ya booty,/And help change the fate of Sleeping Beauty!”
