North Korea test-fires ballistic missiles from Kaesong, says Seoul

North Korea test-fired two ballistic missiles into the sea yesterday, according to South Korea.

The pair were apparently fired from Kaesong just 12 miles from the heavily fortified border with the South.

Rockets are normally tested from eastern port city Wonsan, about 80 miles north of the 38th parallel.

The jointly run Kaesong industrial complex is a rare example of co-operation on the belligerent peninsular and as such is a totem for detente.

But Pyongyang has stepped up its rocket tests after its proposals to de-escalate tensions were snubbed by Seoul.

The South plans to go ahead with contentious annual joint naval drills with the US this week.

North Korea’s National Defence Commission accused the US of “reckless nuclear blackmail and threat” for taking part in the drills.

“Whenever there was a sign of improving the North-South relations and detente on the peninsula, the US resorted to sinister interference and obstructions,” it added.
