PRIVATE security giant G4S will stop running its last two immigration detention centres in Britain next year, but it will continue to provide healthcare to detainees at other sites.
The company will withdraw from its Brook House and Tinsley House facilities at Gatwick after abandoning a bid to renew its Home Office management contracts.
It means that another private company such as Serco could take over running the centres from May 2020, unless Labour takes power and implements its pledge to shut down Brook House altogether.
The site has been dogged by criticism since secret filming showed G4S guards abusing detainees.
Although an inspection report published today found some improvements at the site, G4S said it wanted to focus on its “custody and rehabilitation business” — referring to four prisons it runs in England and Wales.
The company’s subsidiary G4S Health Services (UK) Ltd will continue to provide medical care to detainees at Yarl’s Wood and Morton Hall immigration removal centres.
