Women's Football: Everton 1-2 Arsenal

Toffees stuck at the bottom after late Gunners goal

Arsenal Ladies put some daylight between themselves and bottom-placed Everton with a 2-1 victory yesterday courtesy of a late Alex Scott tap-in.

The win saw the Gunners leap-frog Notts County and open up a five-point gap between them and Everton.

In a game marred by an injury to England and Everton goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis, the away side left it late when Arsenal defender Scott scored the winner with six minutes to go after striker Danielle Carter gave the away side the lead in the first half.

The Toffees equalised minutes later through Nikita Parris but the defeat leaves them four points from the nearest team.

The game started off with both sides looking for an early goal but neither side having the composure to open the scoring.

After 42 minutes, Arsenal found the back of the net and grabbed the first goal of the game.

Carter, who has represented England at under-17 and under-20 level, was quickest to respond to Brown-Finnis’s save from a Leah Williamson effort.

But the lead didn’t last long, Nikita Parris snatched the ball off the Arsenal defence and coolly slotted home in what turned out to be the last kick of the half.

Goalkeeper Brown-Finnis had to be taken off seven minutes into the second half after a collision with Williamson but the England stopper didn’t look to hurt as she managed to walk off the field to rousing applause from the crowd.

Minutes later, the home side were awarded a penalty when Yukari Kinga handled in the box but substitute goalkeeper Emma Byrne managed to get a hand to Michelle Hinnigan’s effort.

And that miss proved to be crucial when Scott put her side 2-1 up with minutes remaining.

Her first shot was well saved by Byrne but she reacted quicker than the Everton defence to tap home the rebound.

With the injuries in the game, the referee added six minutes of added time.

Everton then threw everything they had at Arsenal in an attempt to claw back a point but were unable to do so.
