Environmental activist Thunberg arrives off the coast of New York

TEENAGE climate crisis activist Greta Thunberg arrived off the coast of New York state today after a 15-day Atlantic crossing on a zero-carbon yacht.

“Land!” the 16-year-old Swede tweeted from the Malizia ll. “The lights of Long Island and New York City ahead.

“We have anchored off Coney Island,” she wrote later. “Clearing customs and immigration. We will come ashore at North Cove Marina earliest 14.45, tide allowing.”

Ms Thunberg is due to address the United Nations’ three-day climate summit next month which, according to UN special envoy for the event Luis Alfonso de Alba, will highlight the urgent need for action, not just words.

“I am not concerned about reactions,” Ms Thunberg said before starting the two-week crossing. “What I am concerned about is whether we will do something [about the climate crisis] or not. Whether the people in power will react and act with necessary force.”
