MICK CASH has warned that transport workers will be engaging in a new wave of “militant” strike action across the country, after winning re-election as RMT general secretary.
Mr Cash will serve another five years in the role after receiving the support of thousands of the union’s members.
He became general secretary in 2014 following the unexpected death of his close political ally Bob Crow.
He was returned to the position yesterday with 59.2 per cent of the vote, almost 3,000 votes ahead of his challenger, former RMT president Sean Hoyle.
Mr Cash quickly returned to business, announcing industrial action on London Underground today, as well as strikes by transport workers in Dorset, Hampshire and Newcastle.
These disputes are on top of this weekend’s strike by guards on South Western Railway.
Mr Cash said: “The election for general secretary is done and this union is now wholly focused on our industrial and political campaigning strategy for the next five years as we seek to extend and defend our members’ working conditions, jobs, pay and pensions in every sector where we organise.
“My message to the employers is simple: this trade union will leave no-one behind in the pursuit of workplace justice and we will stand and fight wherever that principle comes under attack.
“We have made huge strides over the past five years and as the list of ongoing disputes shows very clearly, we are united moving forwards as a militant, democratic and campaigning trade union that is all about fighting and winning.”
