Joko Widodo named Indonesia's president

JAKARTA governer Joko Widodo was declared the winner of Indonesia’s presidential election today with 53 per cent of the vote.

The final results from the Election Commission were released shortly after his opponent, multimillionaire former general Prabowo Subianto, declared that he was withdrawing from the contest.

Gen Subianto claimed that there had been massive fraud during the election and that it was unfair and undemocratic.

However, former furniture-maker Mr Widodo, known widely as Jokowi, had maintained a slim lead of about four percentage points in unofficial quick counts by polling agencies released after the July 9 election.

But Gen Subianto, who is now a three-time loser in bids for the presidency, repeatedly claimed that polling firms with links to his campaign showed him ahead.

“We reject the 2014 presidential election which is unlawful and therefore we withdraw from the ongoing process,” he said.

About 100 Subianto supporters protested peacefully close to the Election Commission building in Jakarta.
