Costa: We all run a deadly risk in Ukraine

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa has spoken out about his fear of returning to Ukraine while fighting continues in the city of Donetsk.

The 23-year-old is one of six players who refused to return to the Donetsk for yesterday’s first game of the season.

“I like the club, the people, the city but I’m afraid,” Costa posted on social media website Instagram.

“We all run a deadly risk if we are in the region. We want to stay at the club but we must have risk-free working conditions.”

Should the players continue to stay away from the club, Fifa can impose strict penalties in breach of contract cases.

Players can be suspended for four months and clubs can face a one-year transfer embargo which prevents them from registering and fielding any new signings.
