Labour calls for Gaza ceasefire after 30,000 protest at Israel's London embassy

Labour called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip yesterday after a last-minute vigil brought thousands to the Israeli embassy against the massacre.

Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander condemned the incursions into the Strip and demanded an end to Operation Protective Edge.

“The ultimate goal must be not just an end to the war, but a strategy for building the peace,” Mr Alexander added.

Tuesday evening saw nearly 30,000 people coming together in London as the solidarity movement picked up momentum ahead of Saturday’s national demonstration.

Organisers branded the event a success with a “great turnout for a mid-week demonstration.”

Palestine Solidarity Campaign spokeswoman Amena Saleem argued that such large attendance at only three days’ notice showed “the strength of feeling against the massacre of women and children and against the occupation and siege.”

On Friday PSC will deliver a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron urging an arms embargo on Israel.
