Anti-fascists arrested over National Front clash

THREE anti-fascist activists were arrested after clashing with National Front thugs in Oxford yesterday.

Oxford Unite Against Fascism called a counter-demo after the city’s National Front branch announced a “nationalists against groomers” protest, cynically exploiting the suffering of child abuse victims.

Only around 30 fascists turned up — and they were largely outnumbered by the counter-demonstration of trade unionists, faith groups and the Oxford Feminist Network.

The rally was addressed by Labour city councillor Van Coulter, who told the crowds: “The far-right are trying to create division within society.

“Their influence is a distraction from the real causes of suffering within our society and they’re causes related to capitalism.

“It’s neoliberal policies that are the problem, not so-called differences between us.”

Police arrested one fascist and three anti-nazi protesters. One was detained on a public order offence while another was accused of obstructing a police officer. The third was held on suspicion of stealing a flag.

All were held under lock and key on Saturday night.

Police superintendent Christian Bunt said: “There were a handful of arrests made over the course of the day. However, the vast majority of those taking part were well behaved.”

Seeming to equate the fascist and anti-fascist demos, he added: “The demonstrations had understandably caused concern among some of our communities and I would like to thank them for their tolerance, co-operation and patience.”
