Commonwealth: Peter Tatchell praises Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond for rebuke to anti-LGBTI countries

Peter Tatchell praised Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond yesterday for issuing a “rebuke” to anti-gay Commonwealth nations.

The Scottish government has been flying the rainbow flag over its HQ in St Andrew’s House and has launched its One Scotland anti-discrimination campaign at the height of the games.

“I think Scotland’s key job as the host has been to say: ‘Look, this is where we’ve travelled to. This is where we’re going. This is what we believe,’ and to encourage others along that same route,” said Mr Salmond.

Mr Tatchell described the comments as “an implicit rebuke” to the 42 Commonwealth nations that continued to criminalise their citizens’ gender or sexual orientation.

“Whatever people think about Alex Salmond and the push for Scottish independence, his statement and actions are the most forthright and supportive on LGBTI equality by any leader of any host nation during a major international sporting event,” he said.
