Hoey will not seek selection as Labour MP at next general election

VAUXHALL MP Kate Hoey will not be seeking selection to be a Labour MP at the next general election.

In a letter addressed to her constituents Ms Hoey said she had already decided to not seek re-election in a proposed 2020 general election before being persuaded to fight to retain the seat in 2017.

She wrote that she will “continue every single day to give my all to help my constituents” and serve with “energy, honesty and integrity” until the next general election.

Ms Hoey has represented Vauxhall since 1989.

As a strongly pro-Brexit MP in a staunchly Remain constituency she was threatened with deselection by local party members. The local party unanimously passed a motion of no-confidence in their MP in 2018.

Her announcement was made as the deadline for Labour MPs to tell the party that they wish to stand for reselection came to a close today.

Right-wing MPs Stephen Pound and Stephen Twigg also both announced today that they will not be seeking to stand for Labour at the next general election.
