Lecturers to strike over redundancies threat

LECTURERS at the University of Winchester are set to strike for five days in a row over redundancies.

Management has informed the University and College Union (UCU) that it intends to shed 55 jobs, 48 of which would be academic and research posts.

The strike will start on Tuesday May 28.

Two days after the strike, staff will launch action short of a strike by working strictly to their contracts, not covering for absences and boycotting open days.

The sackings represent 10 per cent of the workforce.

In April students demonstrated in support of the staff.

UCU regional official Moray McAulay said: “UCU members at Winchester have made it quite clear that they will not stand by if the university is going to push ahead with these dangerous cuts.

“Nobody wants to see disruption, but staff feel they have been left with no option other than industrial action.”

Management blamed increased pensions contributions for the redundancies.
