Afghan presidential candidate struck by Kabul blasts

TWO blasts struck Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah’s convoy in Kabul today, killing civilians but leaving the candidate unharmed.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said a suicide bomber had struck the convoy followed by a roadside bomb, killing four civilians.

But Kabul police chief Mohammed Zahir said both explosions were carried out by suicide bombers — the first a driver who blew up a vehicle and the second a suicide bomber on foot.

He said two people were killed and 16 others were wounded.

The attack hit Mr Abdullah’s convoy as it left a campaign event at a wedding hall, destroying several cars and nearby shops, leaving the street littered with twisted metal.

Mr Abdullah is favourite to win the June 14 run-off vote against former finance minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

The brazen attack underlined the limited control that President Hamid Karzai's government exercises, even in the nation’s capital.
