Latin Americans rally for imprisoned Cuban Five

LATIN American ambassadors to the US will rally tomorrow at the culmination of a week of action demanding freedom for jailed Cuban anti-terrorist operatives.

An evening of culture ending the third annual Five Days for the Cuban Five will also hear from religious leaders and activists.

The Cuban Five were arrested by the US in 1998 and jailed on conspiracy charges for investigating the terrorist activities of violent Cuban exiles in Miami.

Two have since completed their lengthy jail terms but three still languish in US prisons.

Campaign group the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 organised events, including a commemoration in Washington DC of the 1976 car bomb that killed Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier and his assistant Ronni Moffit.

Mr Letelier’s son Francisco recounted how the murders were carried out by Miami-based Cuban exile groups, who went on to bomb a Cubana civilian airliner two weeks later, killing all 73 passengers on board.
