Lambeth College support staff join lecturers on picket lines

MORE Lambeth College workers will today pile into a landmark fight to protect their conditions.

Support staff represented by Unison will join members of lecturers union UCU on the picket lines at the college’s Clapham, Brixton and Vauxhall campuses.

The two-day walkout by Unison members comes as principal Mark Silverman refuses to negotiate over plans to impose new contracts that will mean longer hours, fewer holidays and sick-pay cuts.

Mr Silverman has attempted to smash UCU’s indefinite strike action by attempting to lure lecturers to cross picket lines with a free lunch.

But the action will gain momentum today as the unions unite for a mass rally at the Clapham campus at 11am where UCU leader Sally Hunt will speak.

UCU official Una O’Brien repeated her union’s offer to call off the strike if Mr Silverman agrees to suspend the introduction of the contracts for talks.
