Opposition groups call for boycott of companies supporting Sudan regime

SUDANESE opposition groups demanded an international boycott of companies supporting the brutal regime of President Omar al-Bashir on Saturday as a demonstrators marched on the Presidential Palace and army headquarters in Khartoum.

The Sudanese Professionals Association — an umbrella of trade unions and opposition groups co-ordinating the protests — said demonstrations demanding the resignation of Mr Bashir would continue for the next two weeks.

They also called for boycotting institutions, companies, banks, newspapers, and satellite channels which are believed to support the Sudanese security forces.

“We invite you to use the economic boycott weapon against institutions and companies that are working to sponsor the Sudanese security apparatus, with the aim of suppressing and arresting dissidents,” a statement read.

“Economic boycott campaigns are a peaceful and social form of protest and their success depends heavily on collective participation.”

Protests began over the tripling of bread prices, however, soon developed into a movement demanding an end to Mr Bashir’s authoritarian Islamist rule.

At least 50 people have been killed in clashes with security services, according to human rights groups, although the government only acknowledges 32 deaths.

Footage circulating over the weekend appeared to show the Presidential Palace on fire.
