A Latin American band led a lively demonstration by London cleaners and security staff campaigning for the living wage yesterday.
The Justice for Cleaners campaign event outside King’s Cross station aimed to highlight and celebrate the workforce that underpins the smooth running of the capital’s economy.
General union Unite estimates only a fifth of the 20,000-strong cleaning workforce get the £8.80 hourly London living wage rate and most do not get bank holidays or sickness pay.
Unite regional officer Jose Vallejo Villa said: “We have made progress in winning better pay, and terms and conditions for cleaning and security staff — but there is still much to do.”
The union represents about 2,000 cleaners and 1,000 security staff in London.
The King’s Cross event is one of about 40 similar ones being held across the world as part of the Uni Global Union’s celebration of International Justice Day for Cleaners and Security Guards.
