POLISH Prime Minister Donald Tusk said today that early elections within weeks might be necessary if a growing political crisis sparked by eavesdropping on political leaders was not contained.
Mr Tusk called on the magazine Wprost — and other media — to release any secret recordings of leaders’ private conversations that they may have obtained.
He said Poland was facing a “deep crisis” and that until all recordings were published the state would be unstable and his team vulnerable to blackmail.
Police and state prosecutors attempted on Wednesday evening to seize evidence from the magazine’s headquarters.
But editor Sylwester Latkowski put up strong resistance and the authorities left without taking away any computers.
Wprost recently released secret recordings of a conversation last July between National Bank chief Marek Belka and Interior Minister Bartlomiej Sienkiewicz discussing how the bank might use its power to help the government win re-election in 2015.
