Ukraine paramilitaries protest against ceasefire

HUNDREDS of Ukrainian paramilitaries from the Donbass battalion demonstrated outside the presidential offices in Kiev today, demanding an end to the ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.

President Petro Poroshenko agreed on Friday to extend a weeklong ceasefire  until tonight, in an effort to stop fighting between government troops and pro-Russian separatists that has left hundreds dead.

Presidential administration official Henadiy Zubko promised to pass on their demands to the president.

The EU also set a Monday deadline for Russia and the separatists to release all captives, retreat from border checkpoints, agree on a way to verify the ceasefire and begin “substantial negotiations” on Mr Poroshenko’s peace plan.

The EU warned that it was ready to impose new punitive measures on Russia.

Separatist forces released a second team of four Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe observers on Saturday, having held them in eastern Ukraine since the end of May.
