Grant Schapps calls all-women shortlists 'draconian'

TORY politician Grant Schapps labelled the suggestion of increasing the number of women MPs as “draconian” yesterday after a minister proposed all-women shortlists.

Nicky Morgan had confessed to online network Mumsnet that she would consider all options to boost the party’s female quota.

But party chairman Grant Shapps believed the Conservatives have been “making great process” and Ms Morgan’s idea was too extreme.

David Cameron’s current cabinet includes an extraordinary low number of women — five out of a total of 35 ministers.

Despite this Mr Shapps seemed to think that his party was “massively increasing the number of women.”

“It’s better if you can attract people because they want to join the party, because they want to be part of it,” he told Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan.

The fracas is not the first for Mr Shapps, who was responsible for the 2014 budget Beer and Bingo tweet which suggested these were the working class’ favorite hobbies.
