Corinne Diacre has taken over as manager of French second division side Clermont Foot, just days after club president Claude Michy’s sexist attack on her predecessor Helena Costa.
Costa kept her reasons for resigning from her position as manager last Tuesday to her herself but said she had told Michy her reasons for leaving.
Michy, however, told the press that Costa left “because she’s a woman,” which led the Portuguese coach to release a statement to a newspaper saying that players were signed behind her back and that she was ignored by the club’s sporting director Olivier Chavanon as well by Michy.
With the appointment of Diacre, who had managed her former club Soyaux’s reserve team since 2010, it remains to be seen how much power she will get under Michy and Chavanon.
A statement on the club’s website read: “Corinne Diacre has accepted the position of coach of Clermont Foot 63 for the next two seasons and will take up the post early next week.”
The 39-year-old made 121 appearances for France as a player between 1993 and 2005 and is believed to have been contacted about the role just hours after Costa quit last week.
Diacre’s first game in charge will be at home in a friendly next month against first division side Metz.
