Lowes starts with a crushing defeat

by Our Sports Desk

New Bradford boss James Lowes refused to be downbeat yesterday despite his side plunging into deeper relegation trouble with a 50-24 defeat at Warrington.

Lowes, in his first match after taking over as coach from the sacked Francis Cummins, saw Gareth O’Brien and Joel Monaghan score two each of Warrington’s nine tries.

The 44-year-old, in charge at Warrington from 2008-09 until becoming assistant to current boss Tony Smith, said: “I learned quite a lot but it’s not all doom and gloom.

“We were beaten by a very good side who put sides to the sword early on and they did that to us at the start of each half.

“We are in a fight but are ready for it.”

Lowes, who won six trophies in eight years as a player at Bradford, added: “We played some good stuff but there are some massive areas we need to work on.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge and let’s see where we are in a month’s time.

“There is no quick fix, that’s not going to happen.

“But we will fight all the way to our last game irrespective of our position.

“We made a few decent breaks and there are things to work on.”
