Moldova confiscates Russian petition

MOLDOVA’S Foreign Ministry revealed this weekend that its officials had confiscated boxes of signatures from Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin at Chisinau airport and would analyse the material.

The signatures are believed to be a petition from people in the separatist province of Trans-Dniester asking for Moscow’s recognition.

Mr Rogozin said yesterday that the Moldovans had seized “only got a small part” of the signatures.

“We have taken due care of the bulk of the cargo,” he said, adding that Moldova’s “provocation” would have serious consequences for its ties with Russia.

He  visited Trans-Dniester, where 1,500 Russian troops are stationed, to celebrate Victory Day on Friday, offering support to their plea and criticising Moldova's government for seeking closer ties with the European Union.

Romania protested yesterday about Rogozin’s statement that he would fly on a bomber next time after being denied passage through Romanian airspace while travelling back to Moscow.
