PLAID Cymru will launch a bid today to set up an institute promoting worker ownership located in Wales.
Euro-MP Jill Evans was due to call for a British centre to promote employee ownership on the anniversary of the birth of co-operative pioneer Robert Owen.
The centre could be based in Newtown, where Mr Owen was born in 1771, said Ms Evans.
It could be part of a network of centres to promote employee ownership that will be established in each member state of the EU.
Ms Evans said the project could help Wales mirror the success of the Basque Country’s Mondragon workers’ co-operative that employs over 80,000 people in a network of 289 employee-owned companies.
“Wales was the birthplace of the co-operative movement and today we can help build a Europe-wide renaissance in employee ownership,” Ms Evans said.
“The potential for creating new, sustainable, quality jobs is significant.”
