THE leader of Cuba’s construction workers’ union called on the international trade union movement yesterday to fight against the injustices of global capitalism that allows billions to starve.

National Union of Construction Workers general secretary Carlos de dios Oquendo asked how it can be right when the world produces enough food for 12 billion people, nearly one billion suffer from hunger.

He said despite Labour productivity doubling average incomes have grown by only 0.2 per cent with the number of workers whose incomes are just above the poverty line soaring to almost two billion.

“In such a scenario the international trade union movement must and can act together, creating a common space for action based on inclusivity, unity and political diversity in order to save mankind from these policies,” he said.

“An example and a symbol of what can and should be done is what you are doing in the campaign of solidarity with Cuba.

“Long live solidarity and unity among the workers of the world.”
