NASUWT demands binding national pay and conditions

TEACHERS’ union NASUWT demanded binding national standards of pay and conditions yesterday at its Scottish conference in Edinburgh.

Delegates accused the Scottish government and their employers of “eroding” key provisions pledged in 2001, with voluntary agreements failing to protect the workforce from exploitation.

Scotland organiser Jane Peckham said the issue was simple: “Attacks on teachers’ pay and conditions are attacks on children and young people.”

She called for a “national statutory framework of pay and conditions” if Britain is “to continue to benefit from the skills, enthusiasm and knowledge of a highly trained and motivated school workforce.”

General secretary Chris Keates described the reports of excessive workload, increased stress and low morale as “a dangerous cocktail.

“It is no surprise that many of the motions to be debated reflect the deep concern of teachers about the changes which are being made,” she said.
