PROTESTERS took to the streets of Doncaster in South Yorkshire at the weekend demonstrating against the privatisation Britain’s rail network.
The protest followed rail union RMT revelations — published in the Morning Star’s weekend edition — that 70 per cent of Britain’s rail network is now run by profit-hungry overseas operators.
And even more services are at risk. France’s state-owned rail operator is taking over taxpayer-subsidised Southern-Thameslink.
German state railway company Deutsche Bahn is also in line to cherry-pick services run by publicly owned East Cost Main Line — Britain’s most profitable inter-city service, which has earned £800 million for the taxpayer since being taken back into public ownership from incompetent privateers four years ago.
Saturday’s protest demanded the return of Britain’s rail network to public ownership.
RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash said: “On Saturday the focus of the campaign to save our rail services from the poisonous combination of cuts and privatisation shifted to Doncaster in a reminder to the boss class and the political class that we are on to them.”
