Leeds bus manufacturing halted by 24-hour strike

WORKERS at a Leeds international bus manufacturer staged a 24-hour strike yesterday over holidays.

The action involved members of the union Unite at Optare, which was once part of publicly owned British Leyland.

A second strike is scheduled for Monday June 2.

The dispute is over the company’s two-week summer shutdown proposals, which will see workers forced to take their annual leave in the middle of August when family holiday prices can be up to 92 per cent higher.

Unite regional officer Tony Murphy said: “Today’s strike has been rock solid — our members are standing firm against the company’s attempts to impose a two week holiday shutdown in the height of the summer season when the cost of a family holiday skyrockets.

“Our members have always enjoyed flexibility in their holiday entitlement and we do not believe that Optare has a strong enough case to justify a forced summer shutdown.”
