Turkey: Erdogan critic begins hunger strike against extradition

TURKISH revolutionary Turgut Kaya started an indefinite hunger strike yesterday over the Greek government’s plans to extradite him to Ankara.

Mr Kaya said he had been left with no other option after an Athens court ruled that he should be sent back to Turkey, where he insists he will be tortured.

He slammed the Greek government for co-operating with the “fascist Turkish state” and demanded his immediate release from custody.

“Although the attacks have been conducted by the court, this decision is embarrassing for the Greek state,” he said, holding the Syriza-led government responsible.

Mr Kaya was detained in Greece on an Interpol international arrest warrant issued at Ankara’s request. The Turkish authorities allege that he is “a member and a leader of a terrorist organisation” — the TKP/ML — and want to put him on trial.

The court found no evidence of a risk to the lives of political prisoners in Turkey and agreed to extradite him.

Many observers believe there may be a deal to exchange Mr Kaya for Greek soldiers captured in Turkey a few months ago.
